Historic Elmwood Cemetery is the oldest continuously operating, non-denominational cemetery in Detroit. The cemetery, established in 1846 is steeped in history, art and natural beauty.

 Elmwood is the final resting place of 7 governors, 11 US senators and 30 mayors and many other colorful characters from Detroit’s dynamic past such as, Martha Jean the Queen and Charles H. Wright and many more..

 

In addition to seeing the burial sites of many Detroit’s earliest residents, we will also learn about the unique, scenic landscape and topology of this beautiful resting place designed by Frederick Law Olmsted.

This is a leisurely walking tour over uneven ground.  Participants should be prepared to walk for app 2.5 hours.  Not recommended for guest requiring the aid of wheelchairs or other balance support.  Tours are weather dependent and based on restrictions imposed by Elmwood as they strive to respect the families of the deceased.
