Corktown is Detroit’s oldest surviving neighborhood, though it is only half as old as the city itself. Corktown takes its name from the Irish immigrants who settled here; they were primarily from County Cork. As the initial destination of many of Detroit’s immigrant populations, it became home to the people who worked in Detroit’s industries during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Boston-Edison area which was designed and developed by some of Detroit’s most prominent turn-of-the century citizens. The district contains over 900 homes, the first homes in the current Boston-Edison historic district were built and occupied starting in 1905.  Each home reflects the high level of design, craftsmanship and quality of building materials typical of the time.  See the homes of S.S. Kresge (Kmart), John Wagner; Wonder Bread Founder, Walter Briggs; Tiger Baseball Stadium and more including the Motown Mansion, were Barry Gordy Jr entertained music royalty in the 1960’s

Indian Village Tours

Historic Indian Village will captivate you as you hear stories of and see the homes of many of Detroit early Auto Barons.  See the birth place of Henry Ford and the “Wedding Present House” the home of Whinfred Dodge a gift from her father Jack Dodge.  You will immediately sense the luxury and opulent lifestyle of this neighborhood and its early residents.

City Modern in Brush Park is a groundbreaking community development, honoring the innovation, style and diversity of this historic neighborhood. Established in 1860, Brush Park is one of the oldest historic neighborhoods in Detroit. In the late 1700s, the land was part of a ribbon farm owned by the Askin family, prominent fur traders and British loyalists. Many famous Detroiters lived in the area in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century including Joseph L. HudsonAlbert Kahn and Grace Whitney Evans, daughter of David Whitney.

As the city grew around the neighborhood, the advent of the automobile and streetcars allowed wealthier families to move further away from downtown Detroit, with some relocating to the Boston-Edison and Indian Village neighborhoods.

Tiny Town is a short drive out of the downtown core to a mostly forgotten area of the city.  See how Reverend Fowler is transforming the neighborhood and lives.  Tiny Houses are intriguing and creative – see first hand what makes them so special.
